2048 is a sliding-tile puzzle on a 4×4 grid. Every move slides all tiles in one direction, and two tiles with the same number merge into their sum. Keep merging to build the 2048 tile, then keep going for a higher score. Rounds are quick, but good play depends on long-term planning.
How to Play
- Each move slides every tile as far as it can go in the chosen direction.
- Two tiles with the same value that collide merge into one tile with double the value; a tile can merge only once per move.
- After every move a new 2 (or occasionally a 4) appears in an empty cell.
- You reach the goal by creating a 2048 tile. The game ends when the board is full and no merges are possible.
Strategy and Tips
- Choose one corner for your largest tile and keep it there for the whole game.
- Build a descending chain along the edge next to that corner, such as 1024, 512, 256, 128.
- Mostly use two or three directions; the fourth direction tends to pull your big tile out of its corner.
- Keep the board as empty as possible; free cells matter more than quick small merges.

Background
2048 was created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli in March 2014 as a weekend project. It was inspired by the games 1024 and Threes!, and it went viral within days, with millions of people playing in the first weeks.
