24 Game Guide, Rules, and Tips

The 24 Game is a mental arithmetic puzzle: combine four numbers with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division so the result is exactly 24. It is a favorite classroom game for practicing arithmetic and a great quick workout for anyone who likes numbers.

How to Play

  • Use each of the four numbers exactly once.
  • Combine them with +, −, ×, and ÷, and use parentheses to control the order of operations.
  • The final result must equal exactly 24.
  • In Challenge Mode you solve a series of puzzles; the Custom Calculator finds every solution for four numbers you enter.

Strategy and Tips

  • Think in factor pairs of 24: 3 × 8, 4 × 6, 2 × 12, and 1 × 24. Try to turn two numbers into one half of a pair.
  • Use subtraction or division to turn awkward numbers into small helpers like 1, 2, or 3.
  • Remember that division can create fractions that work out later, such as 8 ÷ (3 − 8 ÷ 3) = 24.
  • If one approach fails, go back to the pairs and try combining the numbers in a different order.
