Mahjong Connect Guide, Rules, and Tips

Mahjong Connect, also known as Link Link or Shisen-Sho, fills the board with pairs of picture tiles. Clear them all by connecting identical tiles with a short path before the clock runs out. It is easy to learn, relaxing to play, and a good test of how quickly you can spot patterns.

How to Play

  • Select two identical tiles to remove them.
  • The two tiles must be connected by a path with no more than two turns, and the path cannot pass through other tiles.
  • The path may run around the outside edge of the board.
  • Clear every tile before time runs out. If no moves remain, shuffle the board.

Strategy and Tips

  • Clear tiles on the outer edges first; they open paths into the middle of the board.
  • When a tile has several matching partners, pick the pair that frees up the most space.
  • Scan for pairs that sit directly next to each other; they are always connectable.
  • Save shuffles for true dead ends rather than using them as a shortcut.

Controls

MouseTouch

Click or tap two matching tiles to connect them. Choose Easy, Medium, or Hard before you start, and use the hint and shuffle buttons when you are stuck.

Background

The connect-two-tiles puzzle comes from the Japanese game Shisen-Sho, which uses Mahjong tiles. Link-style games became hugely popular across China in the early 2000s, where they are known as lianliankan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t two matching tiles connect?

The path between them needs three or fewer straight segments and cannot cross other tiles. Try clearing tiles around them first.

What happens if there are no moves left?

Use the shuffle button to rearrange the remaining tiles and create new pairs.

Is there a time limit?

Yes. Each difficulty has a timer, and harder levels give you less time for more tiles.
